Vocation As Vacation

Why do most of us find life boring, even depressing? The robotic pattern of waking up every morning, rushing to work and going through the motions at work can be mind numbing. What is lacking is inspiration. To be inspired you need to expand your mind. Think beyond yourself. Have a vision beyond your individual needs and aspirations and encompass global well being. This vision must translate into a goal that is pursued with relentless focus, deep devotion and hard work. Then you will be so fulfilled at work that you will no longer need a week end. The annual vacation will become redundant as you vocation becomes a source of joy and excitement.

When you do not have a higher ideal, your thoughts gravitate to just your well being. You become obsessed with yourself and fail to see anything beyond the next meal, the next movie to watch. Every other person becomes a competitor. You feel insecure. You imagine, everyone else is out to get you. All your energies get wasted trying to protect yourself from imaginary enemies. Cut off from reality, you sink into an abysss of self-pity, self-obsession and finally self-destruction.

On the other hand, the moment you think beyond yourself, you feel energised, enthusiastic, exhilarated. A higher ideal unlocks your potential, releases energy and gives happiness. All selfish people are unhappy. Selflessness is the key to happiness. The world needs highly skilled people. We need ordinary people with extra ordinary motivation. You can achieve exceptional results if you are inspired with a higher ideal. Replacing inspiration with information has lead to knowledge being viewed as drudgery, rather than as a pleasure.

The highest inspiration is the spiritual goal. How many of us wake up inspired, looking forward to a day of service? Life changes magically from boredom to excitement when you are inspired to serve. Inspiration gives ordinary people courage and hope to make life better for themselves and for future generations. Find inspiration and life will transform into an exciting adventure of self-discovery.

The last Mughal’s poetry as it intertwined with his life.

My heart has no repose in this despoiled land
Who has ever felt fulfilled in this futile world?

The nightingale complains about neither the sentinel nor the hunter
Fate had decreed imprisonment during the harvest of spring

Tell these longings to go dwell elsewhere
What space is there for them in this besmirched heart?

Sitting on a branch of flowers, the nightingale rejoices
It has strewn thorns in the garden of my heart

I asked for a long life, I received four days
Two passed in desire, two in waiting.

The days of life are over, evening has fallen
I shall sleep, legs outstretched, in my tomb

How unfortunate is Zafar! For his burial
Not even two yards of land were to be had, in the land of his beloved

Compassionate Society

A vile act like murder committed in rage would be justifiable to find retribution with another murder sanctioned by law as a punitive measure. More than retaliation what is required is to create an environment of understanding to create a bridge for those in darkness so that they can be helped out of their self created hell, which demands a highly persevering wise and matured approach.

When the rudimentary principles of ethics and morality are complemented with compassion and knowledge then the person will never betray his own conscience. But if conscience is absent, then the person has no humanity in him. What is humanity and what makes one humane, all this needs to be taught and learnt in a conducive environment. Only then it is possible to respond and not react and for this a person needs to cultivate introspection, heightened awareness so as to rise above the shortcomings of mind, eradicate weaknesses and work on expanding consciousness.

The complexities of life cannot be addressed with one line resolutions. If we wish to make a better society the let us first become better parents, better teachers and better human beings. Then we share, spread and disseminate this knowledge by example so that other too get a chance to evolve to live compassionately and cordially. If you hate yourself, you can give hatred to other whereas if you love yourself and see your own true self reflected in all, then there is no way you could cause hurt to another.

We as society need to understand that there are going to be all kinds of people with different mindset, inclinations and dispositions and it would be a utopian idea to believe that everybody will become enlightened one day miraculously. Yet a harmonious environment of love, friendship and respect has to be created and every individual needs to endeavour towards making it possible. If we all set an example of an evolved and responsible behaviour, inspire those around us by instilling peace and love and mutual respect, it would certainly make a difference.

Conscious Drift

Carrying dark clouds as a sheath underneath
Ready to burst at their seam
The ashen sky’s thunderous lightening
Pronounces a reflection of life’s impending theme

Warn it does of a punitive strike
For resisting to seek a safe shelter
Providence is guiding, heed its call
Rather than running helter-skelter

Seamless as seasonal changes occur
Transitions ought to follow suit
Stagnant waters gather moss
Little drift may lend to new channels en-route.

These aren’t just passing clouds
Pour they will to heart’s content
Lashing the fragile state of mind and
Sullying peace till its last remnants

Abort the wretched journey, long endured
In gloomy, damp, inclement climate
Pastures abound where sun shimmers
Just take that leap of faith, don’t procrastinate

Living Life Free from Problems

Life can never be completely free of problems. When only one person lives there will be no problem but when there is more than one person, problem becomes a given. No two persons think alike, look alike or have similar tastes. So there are bound to be differences and judgements born thereof. This creates disharmony and tension. What is the solution to live a life of Peace?

Truth is multi dimensional. Truth has also so many perspectives. Through our eyes we can see anything, either this or that. With the possibilities of different perceptions there is always scope of difference of opinion and conflict. It is difficult to understand the truth. The greatest truth is the truth of conduct.

There is a fear in the world. We are scared of sorrow. When there is possession, there is fear. Where there is no possession, there is no fear. Giving up possession and observing restraint is the solution to today’s problems. The essence to a fearless life, a peaceful life is through restraint.

The human being has to set limits to all activities. Observe limits to consumption, possession. Limitless consumption is the reason for our problems. Anger, delusion, ego and greed are veiling the truth from our vision. All these passions are born with the desire to possess beyond our limits. Let us try to overcome our greed for possession.

Live Life with Compassion

Compassion is not an attribute of any one religion. It is a universal principle for happiness and peace. In a world torn by conflict and strife where violence and not love dictates people’s action, what every person at every age needs to learn is the art of nurturing compassion within.  Whoever you may be, you need compassion.  Compassion should no more lie in the ideologies of Philosophers or in the lucrative rewards of theologians (in after life). The voice of compassion needs to be heard in every household, educational institution, office, mall and theatre besides other places and circumstances.

Compassion begins with empathy.  Empathy is the ability to feel for another. Those who are sensitive to the motions of life, to the experience of pain and pleasure are capable of empathy. Those who have paid attention to their emotional upsurges, the unintelligent ways of anger, hurt or hate, the irrationality of fear, feel empathy for another who is going through a similar emotion. Empathy and compassion thus born would naturally blossom into acts of kindness to reach out to others.

Well being of the other is the highest priority for a compassionate person. Hence his/her actions would reflect tremendous intelligence, fortitude and discretion. Compassion is not the armour of the weak. It is a weapon of the strong. To believe that anger and violence can solve our problem is a mistaken belief. Problems at micro as well as macro level arise because of lack of understanding and love between people. Situation based problems need better strategy and skill to solve them but  emotion based problems need people who are involved, in moving out of those negative emotions that are causing them.

That is why any constructive change can never be effected through anger and violence. Compassion is the answer. Let us nurture the noble virtue of compassion with dedication.  Let us see the faces of people who walk into our world with smiles, tears, affection and wrath. Let us mediate on their feelings to let compassion blossom.
